Climate

Temperatures range from 180 – 370 Celsius.
Generally the climate is that of equatorial dessert which is hot and dry fanned by a cool breeze especially in the evenings. The nights are also cool. This makes it suitable to have safaris all year round.

Health
We have a fully equipped clinic that caters for staff and guests whenever emergencies arise. The nurse will provide assistance at a nominal fee and make referral to a larger well equipped hospital if need be.

Ashnil Samburu Camp sits in Buffalo Springs Game Reserve which takes its name from an oasis of crystal clear water at the western end of the reserve. It is separated from Samburu National Reserve by Ewaso Nyiro River and is less hilly and dense yet equally very attractive.

Try the surprising international, oriental and African traditional cuisines. There are other available options in place that can be arranged on request like bubbly bush dinners and breakfast and picnic lunch boxes. Nearby is our modern lounge, with its décor perfectly done to give it an African touch. This is great for business talks or a place to pass time and relax. In the evenings, enjoy the breathtaking sunset after taking a game drive to this truly heavenly place. In the morning start the day with an early morning game drive in the quite serene wilderness.

Accommodation

There are a total number of 24 deluxe en-suite tents, 12 with King or Queen sized beds, 9 with twin beds and 3 with triple beds. Each of the exclusive comfortable deluxe tents gives perfect view of the Ewaso Nyiro River, surrounding beautiful landscape and all lives this brown river supports. Every spacious tent consists of a dressing area, sitting area, luggage rack and en-suite facilities to provide a memorable stay close to nature.

Facilities

The main guest area, shaded by a canopy of acacia trees consists of the reception, lounge area, dining area, bar and veranda deck with a view of the river.


Restaurant

The open sitting restaurant located in the main building, overlooks the Ewaso Nyiro River and can sit a maximum of 100 guests. The buffet platforms, both warm and cold, sit in the middle of the restaurant for easy access by all.

Meal plans: Full board accommodation basis. Buffet setting is the preferred serving style but if a guest has a specific request out of the normal buffet served, we can arrange for an a la’ carte menu to suit their needs that is chargeable.

Menus: There is a variety of menus to choose from but mainly oriental, international cuisine and a taste of African traditional dishes.

There are other available options that can be arranged on request like bubbly bush breakfast and picnic lunch boxes.


Lounge bar

The lounge is located in the main building sectored away from the main dining area. The décor has an African touch that makes it a wonderful place to pass time and relax. There is a variety drinks served and include liqueur, soft drinks, cocktails, wines, and spirits, local and international beers. The sitting capacity is about 60 guests.


Conferencing

With the MICE concept picking ground in the industry, Ashnil hotels has embraced the idea by putting in place conference facilities in all the three units to compliment professionals whose line of duty demands conferencing events. We have put in place a conference facility with a revolutionized modern technology which include LCD projector for clear vision, good sound system, and other facets of building success in conference tourism.


Souvenir shop

The souvenir shop stocks curios, African clothing, jewellery and accessories as well as other basic items like toiletries etc. It is open form 6.00 am – 10.00 pm with permissible lunch break.


Swimming pool

After a grueling game drive you can take a dip in our swimming pool or simply relax by the pool which is a wonderful viewing deck of the Ewaso Nyiro River. This is the perfect place to relax and laze around in the calm afternoons.

Game drives

Full or half day game drives can be arranged to explore the national reserves’ flora and fauna.

There are a variety of safari activities which offer exciting add‐ons to one's stay. They vary depending on the clientele needs and include guided nature walks, evening entertainment, sundowner and game drives.

We also specialize in organizing an exchange of vows in the theatre of wildlife escorted by the Maasai or Samburu traditional dancers, bush dinners, bush breakfast and picnic lunches.

The prime location of our properties in the conservation areas provides an ideal start of game viewing right from the balcony of your room. A drive east, west, south or north of the lodges will give you an equal opportunity to see and appreciate nature and how resourceful it can be when conserved. While most guests will look for the big five as a priority, we look at nature in its entirety and appreciate even the smallest of the creatures available in the conservation areas.

Sundowner

This is a perfect way to end the day along the magnificent Ewaso Nyiro River where you can relax and watch the sun slowly set as you unwind with a cocktail before dinner.

Weddings

Ashnil hotels will be prepared to arrange an exchange of vows in the theatre of the wild – Buffalo Springs Game Reserves.

Guided nature walks

Guests can enjoy discovering the diversity of the national reserve on foot and have an intimate encounter with the wildlife and nature. For those who love bird watching our resident naturalist will take you on a guided tour through the reserve to learn about the various bird species.

Evening entertainment

Evening entertainment of Samburu cultural talks and dances gives you a special opportunity to gain in-sight in to the traditional lifestyle of the Samburu people. Also visit the Samburu villages and buy their unique handicrafts.

Clinic / dispensary is manned by a Kenya registered nurse who is on site. Guests should take appropriate preventive measure as advised by medics from country/ region of origin.

Ashnil Samburu is on telephone exchange to both domestic and international calls.

Electricity

Ashnil Samburu is not on the main power supply line and sources its power from a generator set. Electricity outlets have 220/240 voltage capacity.

Laundry / Dry cleaning

Laundry service is available and we provide services as per client/ guest specifications.

Room service

This service is limited to wake up calls at no extra cost but can be extended to other services at a cost as may be prescribed at the service point.

Safe deposit boxes

The hotel offers use of safe deposits which are located in the rooms free of charge. Please follow instructions from the manual provided.

Credit cards

All major credit cards are accepted and run through a manual transaction with authority sought from the bank. Switch cards, Maestro and visa electron cards will not be accepted as we do not have direct lines PDQ machines which are not compatible with the wireless lines currently in use in the lodges and camps.

Currency exchange

Foreign currencies can be converted into Kenyan shillings at a rate dictated by market forces.

Security

The unit is patrolled on a 24 hr basis and is entirely protected by an electric fence.

Buffalo Springs Game Reserve takes its name from an oasis of crystal clear water at the western end of the reserve. It is separated from Samburu National Reserve by the Ewaso Nyiro River and is less hilly and dense yet equally very attractive. The topography of the reserve is characterized by gentle rolling lowland plains and the main features include:

  • Ancient lava-terrace that forms the Champagne Ride in the south east
  • The buffalo springs – are permanent and provide drinking water for the wildlife making it attractive to diverse fauna and prolific ave life (about 400 species)
  • The vegetation consists of doum palm and acacia riverine forest with a combination of scrubs and grasslands well adapted to the dry region.

The attractions in the area include:

  • Home to the big five and other wildlife
  • Prolific bird life – about 400 species of indigenous and migratory birds
  • Variety of reptiles and aquatic species in the Ewaso Nyiro River
  • Rich Cultural and community attractions – cultural villages which sell their traditional crafts, traditional dances, traditional food and a smile that lasts forever!!
